1864 – The northernmost action of the American Civil War took place in the Vermont town of St. Albans.

Some 25 escaped Confederate POWs led by Kentuckian Bennett Young (21) raided the town near the Canadian border with the intent of robbing three banks and burning the town. While they managed to leave town and hide out in Canada with more than $200,000, their attempts to burn down the town failed. Most of the raiders were captured and imprisoned in Canada and later released after a court ruled the robberies in St. Albans were acts of war.

I know this even comes before the actual birth of the consitution, but the United States had existed technically since 1776 with the Declaration of Independance, so this in my opinion should have been the headline of the day.
British Surrender at Yorktown
Lord Cornwallis was "sick" that day and his second in command offered Cornwallis' sword to the Marquis de Lafayette who then directed him to Gen. Washington. Washington also parleyed this honor down to his second in command Gen. Lincoln who was forced to surrender Charlestown previously to Cornwallis.
Though the conflict persisted in other theaters, specifically on the high seas, this was the last major battle of the American Revolution.
