It was a fine spring Sunday. We were anchored outside of San Diego harbor on holiday routine. Sparky and I were sitting on one of the forward gun mounts enjoying the day when our Division CPO came out with a bay rod and tackle. Now Chief was not what you would call........personable.....by any means. So we were pleasantly surprised when he started up a relaxed conversation. He told us he was going to show us how an expert fisherman did things. Over the next 15 - 20 minutes Chief assembled the rod and reel, spooled his line on the reel and constructed an elaborate assembly of leaders, weights, hooks and bait. He also mentioned that he had borrowed this expensive equipment from a fellow Chief. When he had everything ready he took up a stance next to the railing and explained the nuances of the proper swing to get the best distance and accuracy of the cast. Rearing back he gave a tremendous heave. The weights, hooks with bait and line went sailing off into the distance.......followed closely by the rod and reel...... I'm biting my lip hard enough to taste blood (literally!) and I'm keeping my mouth shut. But my buddy,,,NOOOooooooo! He says, (earnestly!) "Gee! That's a pretty good technique there.......a bit difficult to reel back in though. Could you show us that just one more time?" That was all I could stand. I actually fell over laughing my butt off. Chief never said a word. He walked off and disappeared in the "goat locker". I won't go into detail, but suffice it to say we caught the wrath of Chief for months! Moral of the story "Never laugh out loud when your Chief makes an oops!"

I was asked what i thought was an honest question by my recruiting station commander, so i gave him an honest answer, he asked, "how do you like this job?" i answered, "I would rather be back in OIF 1" i received a negative counseling recommending dismissal from recruiting duty.
i started leave the next day and was never more relaxed! but when i returned 1SG sent me back to work like it never happened.

Talking our greenhorn 2LT into jumping up and down on top of the APC while I check the travel on the shocks! Got caught when the Platoon Sergeant came around the corner and saw the LT in mid-jump.
The LT asked if he could help. It really helped my mood and morale to see him jumping up and down on that APC!! ;)

In 1961 we were in the Pacific, near Johnson Island (neat place for liberty -NOT), waiting for the AF to drop a nuke. We had spent a week or so on 12.& 12 making sure all comm was 100%, as we were target comm ship. As I was making my midnight rounds I opened the hatch to Transmitter 2 and observed an Engineering Ensign with a wardroom table knife tuning (?) a 1kw hf transmitter. I said good evening sir and shut the hatch and padlocked it and went to my bunk. (no comm in there besides sound powered phones. I slept with a smile until rudely shoved awake at 5 AM.
