When would it be beneficial to provide my Github profile on my resume?

Never. Too much info for a resume. However, if you think a potential employer might want to look at code you've written, providing a link on your resume may be helpful.

Hard to argue that. Would it somewhat differ depending on the type of job and type of contributions I make ?

SGT (Join to see) - it would. If you were going for a development job putting code based in whatever language that job predominantly uses would be best.
If you were going for a reverse engineering job maybe you'd take code from Malware and just add comments explaining what sections/lines do.

If you are applying for a coding position then always provide a link to at least some of your code... I care more about seeing the code you've written than knowing where or even if you went to college.
