Have you experienced an increased level of patriotism coming from your civilian neighbors or friends during the recent World Cup run? I have on two occasions while at lunch been approached and asked if I thought that USA was going to win only to start to hear chanting. Is this true for anyone else?

I will give you a different spin on your question. My family and I currently live in Belgium. We live in a small town between SHAPE and Chievres AB. The national pride that the Belgians have with their team in unbelievable. There are flags everywhere, national colors everywhere, car decorations, trinkets and fan apparel sold in all the stores, etc. After each victory to date, the locals go up and down the road beeping their horns and enjoying themselves.

I would hope that this display of national pride was also displayed in America. While some may argue that a sporting event is not something that can tie a nation together or bring out national pride, I would disagree. Whether it is the World Cup, Memorial Day or Veteran's Day tributes at the ball parks, or 9/11 Remembrance ceremonies, I will always take pride when the nation comes together to celebrate the nation.

LTC Paul Labrador I think you are right. But to take it even further, You rarely even see our different regions get behind an event or sports team (with the exception of SEC Football).

Sir, this was my first real opportunity to sit down and watch soccer. My kids are really into it die to the international community that we live in. It is boring...95% of kicking a ball around with 5% scoring opportunities. And SFC Kendrick...I am a Big Ten fan myself so I pretty much yawn when folks talk about the SEC... ;)

In this day and age if Americans can rally and unite around something as simple as a soccer game, who knows where that could lead! Go America!

Unfortunately the last time that our country rallied behind anything was 9/11. It would seem that many HAVE forgotten.

Many have placed that part of our history in the rear view mirror, and for that, it is unfortunate SFC Kendrick. I still cherish any opportunity where we as Americans can rally around our flag and be united. If that is a sporting event, then so be it. I would much rather it be something like that than another incident where innocent American lives are lost. I am not a big soccer fan, but to see folks united, it feeds my pride.
