What is your opinion on what happened at the airport in Turkey and what can be done about it?

Tactically, it's brilliant. I'm not condoning the action of the enemy but your must respect the tactic. The point of airport security is to protect the planes. The point of terrorism as a tactic is to change people's status quo. The achieved this, as a result, security with extend beyond the entrance of an airport and will expand. This will raise the cost and affect the calculus of the government.

Maybe what we need is better security for ALL entrances to airports. Arrivals and departures. There are too many areas of an airport where people can just wait around. Up until now, security only checks those boarding planes. Maybe we need metal detectors to enter the building at all. Like we have for court houses and capitol buildings. But I know it's an expense to obtain the equipment needed. DIA has 5 levels with 3-4 doors each on the west and east sides. That's a lot of metal detectors. Unrealistic? Depends on who has to pay for it.

I just went through Ataturk International Airport last month.
The Turkish security was impressive; in rough terms at least double the security at Washington Dulles.
At the Departures terminal, just inside the door, there were security screening and metal detectors/X-Ray machines for not only personnel and carry-on luggage, but also for checked bags. Once negotiating that layer of security, departing passengers proceeded to the airline ticketing agents to obtain their boarding passes and check their bags. From there, passengers negotiated a second security checkpoint with their carry-on bags encompassing another metal detector and X-ray of baggage. From there, passengers could proceed to the typical airport shops and duty-free stores.
At the gate for my international flight was another security checkpoint with X-Ray machine and metal detector, as well as another closely scrutinized review of travel documents (boarding pass and passport).
The international arrivals terminal was typical; security review at passport control stations, and picking up of our checked bags under the watchful eye of numerous security personnel; this was followed by exiting the security area into the typical international flight reception area crowded with family members picking up their loved ones at the airport, as well as tour group guides and chartered bus and limousine drivers. All was under the watchful eyes of well-armed airport security and police, who were also standing at the exterior doors and outside, screening approaching vehicles and people, and not permitting any vehicles to approach and park in the near lane adjacent to the exterior doors.
My initial understanding evolving as more information becomes available: Turkish security forces initially engaged the terrorists at the outer physical perimeters of the airport, and possibly two of the three terrorists were able to get inside the outer doors.
Ataturk Airport is one of the busiest airports in Europe. In May, the Turkish security forces and police appeared, in my opinion, to be very professional and serious about their duties.
I have to assume the initial security response will be to push back the physical outer perimeter or possibly add another layer at the external airport approaches. Perhaps add additional technical means to screen/scan approaching vehicles - which will inevitably impede the free flow of traffic.

COL Korey Jackson - Scanning vehicles sounds time intensive but might be the only way to keep bombers away from large crowds of people.

Good morning,
That is a great question MSG. I would like to ask that question to the FOB the followers of Muhammad pounded their heads towards Mecca at.
Koran 8:12. The tragedy at the Turkish airport is sadly not an extremist act. Apostates are the only extremists within Islam.
Know your enemy and don't worry. They are being brought here so we can hold hands and sing songs together of love and compassion with our shared humanity.
BZO your weapon,
M. Morris RVT
