That it was, Sergeant. :) So, has anyone ever figured out why the COP was placed where it was?

Mr. Efstathiou. -not to seem flippant but it seems you are unfamiliar with the US Military, someone far away behind a desk in the Pentagon probably thought,Gee what a picturesque spot lets put some grunts there to enjoy the scenery, kind of like what they did to us Vietnam guys and we know how that turned out!

No, you're not flippant at all, Sergeant. And please, call me Nick. I was just curious, I know in the book that the COP is initially referred to as "Custer." I just wanted to know if there was a particular individual it could be pointed to. I know in WWII the island of Pavavu (SP?) was chosen after a simple fly-over for a rest and recup spot. I should have phrased the question as "who" made the choice. And as for Vietnam, my father never could understand why they sent a cold-weather specialist from Germany to fight in Southeast Asia. Brilliant decisions.

Nick - I do not think any group or individual was mentioned in the book about the site of the COP as a former low level enlisted man I know that info would be far above my pay grade so I would guess some Army think tank back in the States had that bright idea.I do know I was taught 50 years ago that you defend and hold the high ground pretty basic Infantry stuff by the way if possible tell your father Welcome Home Vietnam guys will understand.

Sir, I would highly recommend it, especially if you enjoy reading current military works. Usually I focus on the Pacific campaign of WWII, but this was excellent.
