I got a sweet defense contracting job doing missile defense testing based on nothing but the fact that I had competed ADA officer basic and had a couple of months experience as fire control PL. For reference, I had no testing or engineering experience prior, I had been a high school chemistry teacher for 11 years. Civilian path for 14E: 14E to system maintainer, system maintainer to warrant officer, warrant officer to RAYTHEON. If you choose 14E, become an officer, that will open much better job opportunities. The reason for this is simple, promotions. 14H are over strength at E6/E7 due to the bottle necking that has occurred since 2012.

Quality of life is a bit better as a 14H, but either way... you're stuck in ADA unless you find a special assignment at division level or higher.
