My belief is that many people had to work very hard to get their wealth and pay their share of taxes along the way, why shouldn't someone who just inherits that same wealth without working for it pay a share as well.

SFC Justin Scott - I read you Lima-Charlie. Didn't mean to come off condescending with my remarks. Hope you didn't take it as such. If you did, my regrets.

Capt Mark Strobl - I didn't take it as you being condescending at all. I'm just blunt and to the point in my posts. Sorry if my response came across wrong to you.

LCDR (Join to see) - Yes, nearly all money received is taxed in some manner. It is expected that you'll pay sales tax when you purchase things. It is not, however, expected that my child will pay taxes if I give them money since I already paid taxes on it. This is what we are talking about. There is a difference between income and inheritance.

Capt Mark Strobl - Older cars are taxed on the value of the vehicle, not the usage. Buy a new car and the taxes are high, next year a little less and so on. Now in Ga you pay a one time tax when you purchase a new vehicle and the after you pay just for the tag. If retired military it would cost nothing. And if you had a Purple Heart you get another free tag. Had a friend that had both. But the original owner is the only one that keeps the tax free tags.. Sir

I worked that land as a farm kid coming up to help pay those taxes. My parents mortgaged and paid off and mortgaged and paid off and so on to make crops and take care of their family. I nor my daughter when she gets it should have to pay a damn dime to the government because it was left to me. If I bought it outright, then that is different but if it was left to me in my family because they poured their blood sweat and tears into it, literally, then I shouldn't be punished for a gift.

Why should we punish the acquisition of wealth by any means? Earnings. Inheritance. Whatever. The most important issue we need to encourage is thrift. Tax people on what they spend.
