Ok, I am stuck in a 20 level spot. I moved from Campbell to Lewis to gain a 30 level. Left on deployment came back was getting trained up and heard rumor of some one taking the spot I was getting trained up on. My ERB did not say 30 level. The SSG came in and acquired his position. I am now on the floor turning wrenches (what I love doing). My question is what should my next move be I don't like being behind a desk but would like to move up to warrant or SSG and have my own shop. Lend me your knowledge.

Go to the board, get recommended for promotion, acquire enough promotion points and get promoted to SSG.

I wish it was that easy MSG, gaining point to get 798 is rough, but you are right I am going to the board when I get back to the states.

SSgt, each skill level pertains to what basic tactical/technical skills a soldier should know. Training and Doctrine Command TRADOC establishes basic warrior task and drill for each rank (skill level). Commanders have the authority to add certain skills and drill base on the Unit METL.

So if I am a SSG and is level 2O, i'm undertrained? Probably won't get promoted? I should be at level 4O?

If you are SSG filling a Skill level 2O slot you are working at the SGT Level. Not necessarily under trained just not working at the appropriate skill level because of Unit needs. Now as a SSG you dont want to work anything below Skill level 3O = Squad Leader/Section NCOIC.
