Do you think the Navy is going overboard by reviewing all the Enlisted ratings (job titles) than end in man to come up with something gender-neutral? I think the military maybe just a little too sensitive. What would we call a Seaman or Yeoman? A Seaperson or YeoYeo?

Good god...can we stop with the stupid already. In my 31 years in the Navy, this was the last thing on my mind. I was always more concerned about learning my job and being the best Sailor that I could be. Political Correctness run amuck.

Master Chief, A weapon knows no gender. It is a effective as the individual using it. This is getting very tiring and dilluting the purpose of the Navy. As of January 12 there is a boat crew being held by the Iranians. My guess is that they really wouldn't care what your gender, just your competence level to rescue them. Enough wasted time, energy and thought on these matters.

Man has been used as a so called neutral term in all sorts of jobs. I have rarely found that a female policeman, postman, corpsman, etc. has ever been offended by the term man.

It may stem from the term to 'man' a post iriginally and no longer applies to a particular sex. That is why those titles are easily accepted with nobody being degraded when that is how they were referred to.
