After Army Deputy Chief of Staff General Cody (4-star aviation Jedi Master) pinned my PH, he was making a speech to the troops in attendance. My tiny man is 6 years old and walks up to him and just looks up at him. He stops dead in his tracks and asks 'Hey, what's up there future trooper?' My son says 'Dad's going to take us for ice cream after this if I behave myself.' General Cody: 'Sounds good. I'll be really quick then.'

My daughter. I end up eating half of her ice cream with one scoop or it would melt all over her and the ground.

Very nice CSM Michael J. Uhlig. I will never understand why we bring troops home and don't allow them to see loved ones immediately and then do the ceremony. It is awful, to be so close, and standing in formation. I have seen this done many ways, but I always preferred letting troops see there families and then getting back in formation for the ceremony. Nevertheless, still an awesome video.

Having set up, participated, or viewed many welcome home ceremony, I can say the way 1ST CAV came to do it when I was there was the best I had ever seen.. it was fastest, Landing to feet moving, fastest, bus to family's arms.
The Division standard was 60 min, AC wheels down to release...No matter who was in charge, speaking at the ceremony or issues that arose along the way,, that was a staff problem to fix, never trickle down to the SM coming home.... We would joke, if a bus broke down and back up did as well... the Horse detachment was getting called in, and SM were getting to the field by bus, horse or piggy back.. one way or another on time.
That’s Securing weapons and sensitive items, accountability, classified docs and equipment, few min of transport time from airfield to parade field, all gates manned and opened, MP escort.
Off the bus, form up, walk to field position, Officer presiding has less than 10 min to say what they want to say and command "Charge" to the family's.. Many times it was more like 4-6 min. and the 60 min time line AC wheels down to release was often beat.
To turn SM loose to family, then gather them back up and do a ceremony followed be release would be hard pressed to be done in such short of a time and without being very…stern to both SM and family’s

CSM Michael J. Uhlig A friend also sent me this on Facebook. The little girl obviously didn't give a whit about a stinkin' formation......Daddy's home !!! And 1Lt Oglesby reacted perfectly to the situation. What a great day .....
