Wife and I had a picnic on Alcatraz Island when we were dating in 1969. I suppose we were trespassing, but we weren't the only ones there, and it was a fun place to explore. It hadn't deteriorated very much and lots of areas were fenced off, but knowing it's history was enough to make the mind wander.

We wanted to have our wedding reception at the Treasure Island O'Club. They were totally booked though.

The contractors and the government failed to account for the deterioration salt water exposure causes to metal and concrete.

Lt Col John (Jack) Christensen I think they understood it, I just think they didn't care as they wanted a fortress prison for the incorrigibles.
